Sleep Cycle Visualizer
See Your Night’s Sleep in Full Color
Ever wondered what your sleep really looks like? The Sleep Cycle Visualizer helps you see your night’s journey through light, deep, and REM sleep stages. Visualize ideal sleep cycles vs. realistic patterns, and learn how timing impacts how you feel each morning.
Why Use This Sleep Cycle Visualizer?
Numbers alone don’t capture your sleep’s rhythm. Seeing your sleep cycles helps you plan your bedtime and wake-up to avoid groggy mornings and boost recovery.
- 🌀 Visual Clarity: A 24-hour clock view makes it easier to grasp how cycles repeat and shift.
- ⏱️ Recognize Patterns: Compare ideal 90-minute cycles to a realistic pattern that includes a standard fall-asleep delay.
- 🧭 Plan Smarter: Whether you're adjusting your routine as a night owl or early bird, this visual helps you understand how small timing tweaks may affect your rest.
This isn’t a personalized calculator—it’s a learning tool to help you make sense of your night.
How Sleep Works
Sleep Stages & Cycles
Your sleep moves in cycles, each lasting about 90 minutes. A full night typically includes 4–6 cycles, rotating through:
- Light sleep – gentle entry
- Deep sleep – physical restoration
- REM sleep – dreaming and memory consolidation
These stages repeat throughout the night, in a predictable flow.
Cycle Length Variability
Not all cycles are created equal. While 90 minutes is average, your cycles could range between 80 and 110 minutes. This visualizer lets you see how small changes in length affect your overall rhythm.
Drift-Off Delay
Sleep doesn't start the moment your head hits the pillow. A typical person takes 10–20 minutes to fall asleep. The realistic view includes this delay so you can compare a clean "ideal" cycle layout to one closer to real life.
How to Use the Visualizer
This page offers two preset visualizations to help you understand your cycles:
Select a Cycle Length
Choose from preset options: 80, 85, 90 (default), 95, or 100 minutes.
Each selection redraws the cycles to show how longer or shorter durations affect your sleep flow.
Choose Your View
- Ideal Cycles: Continuous 90-minute blocks starting at midnight
- Realistic Cycles: Same blocks, but shifted by a fixed 15-minute drift-off delay

You’ll see a 24-hour clock face with colored bands:
- Pale = Light sleep
- Dark = Deep sleep
- Medium tones = REM sleep
This is based on general sleep architecture—not your specific night.

FAQs
What are sleep cycles?
Each night, you pass through multiple sleep cycles, each including light, deep, and REM sleep. The average cycle is about 90 minutes.
Why does my ideal cycle differ from my real sleep?
Life, stress, and routines affect your cycles. This visualizer helps you spot trends and improve your sleep over time.
Why can’t I enter my own sleep times?
This visualizer is designed to show standardized sleep patterns. If you want to calculate your exact bedtime or wake-up time, try our bedtime calculator or wake-up calculator.
What’s the difference between ideal and realistic?
The ideal version assumes you fall asleep instantly. The realistic view adds a 15-minute delay to better match what typically happens in real life.
Can I change the drift-off delay?
Not here. This demo keeps drift-off fixed at 15 minutes for simplicity. To personalize it, use our calculators.
How do I know which cycle length fits me best?
Start with 90 minutes. Then test 85 or 95 to see how your real nights compare. You can track how refreshed you feel waking at different times to dial in your cycle length.
